Construction of the Hong Kong Section began on January 2010, with service scheduled to open in 2015.

There three stops between Guangzhou South Railway Station and Shenzhen North Railway Station, but the journey still takes just 35 minutes – about 30 minutes less than by the old train between Guangzhou East Station and Shenzhen Railway Station. The Guangshen section connects Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Shenzhen in Guangdong. The total distance is 116 kilometres and the expected travel time between Guangzhou's Guangzhou South Railway Station and Shenzhen's Futian Station is 36 minutes. Trains on this line will run at a maximum speed of 350 km/h.

Under the current plan the total distance will be 142 kilometres, and the expected travel time from West Kowloon Terminus in Kowloon to Guangzhou South Railway Station in Shibi, Guangzhou will be 48 minutes.

For the time being, travelers can change at Guangzhou South Railway Station to Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed rail in order to travel to Wuhan and Changsha. It takes about five hours from Shenzhen to Wuhan.
